During this time, the industry was characterized by established production and a shift towards safer binding agents like polyvinyl acetate, moving away from formaldehyde resins to address workplace health. The market then contracted in 2019 before a slight recovery in 2020.

Market value surged by over 28% in 2021, reaching 50.1 million USD, and continued growing to a peak of 56.1 million USD in 2022. This was followed by a sharp decline of nearly 33% in 2023, bringing the market size back to levels similar to 2019.

In 2024, the market value fell further to 34.1 million USD. This decrease was influenced by the temporary closure of border crossing points with Russia in February, which affected trade flows, and by growing MDF production capacity in Russia, altering import dynamics and competition.

Production MDF in Finland

From 2017 to 2020, Sweden, Estonia, and the Netherlands were the top contributors to Finland's MDF exports in volume terms. Sweden accounted for 43.9% of exports, Estonia for 26.3%, and the Netherlands for 12.2%, together making up 82.4% of total export flows.

After a two-year decline, Finland's MDF imports rebounded in 2020, reaching 88 852 m³, which represents a steep increase of 42.1% year-over-year. However, between 2017 and 2020, imports overall decreased by 4.6%, equating to an annualized decline of 1.6%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 62 528 m³, with the largest decline of 27.8% also occurring that year.
