Earlier Report Observations
The wood fuel market in Thailand contracted significantly between 2018 and 2023, with market size falling from 15.6 million m³ to 10.5 million m³. This represented a decline of approximately one-third over the period, with the most pronounced drop occurring after 2020.
The primary driver of this contraction was a sharp increase in exports, which more than doubled from 3.3 million m³ in 2018 to 8.0 million m³ in 2023. During the same period, domestic production slowly retreated from 18.5 million m³ to 18.2 million m³, while imports remained marginal, never exceeding 0.3 million m³ annually.
By 2023, exported volumes accounted for nearly half of Thailand's total wood fuel production, substantially reducing the amount available for domestic consumption and leading to a smaller internal market.
