The wood fuel market in South-eastern Asia experienced notable volatility between 2018 and 2023. After a modest increase from 135.7 million m³ in 2018 to 137.1 million m³ in 2019, consumption dropped sharply to 92.1 million m³ in 2020 and further to 90.6 million m³ in 2021. The market then recovered substantially, reaching 119.7 million m³ in both 2022 and 2023.

Domestic production followed a consistent downward trajectory, falling from 146.3 million m³ in 2018 to 135.8 million m³ in 2023. Export volumes were highly variable, peaking at nearly 50 million m³ in 2020 and 2021 before declining to 17.0–18.7 million m³ in 2022-2023. Imports remained marginal throughout most of the period but showed a marked increase to 1.5 million m³ in 2024.

By 2022-2023, the market had stabilized at a level roughly 12% below its 2018-2019 average, reflecting a new equilibrium between supply and demand.

Wood fuel production in South-eastern Asia has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 141.9 million cubic meters of wood fuel, which represents a 1.4% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 4.5%, averaging an annual decline of 1.5%.

Exports wood fuel from South-eastern Asia

The export market for wood fuel from South-eastern Asia experienced significant volatility during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2019 at 7,816 thousand cubic meters, then surged to a peak in 2020 with 49,943 thousand cubic meters—a dramatic 539.0% increase year-over-year. This represents a 6.4-fold difference between the two years. The sharpest decline occurred in 2018, when exports dropped by 64.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, South-eastern Asia's wood fuel exports were dominated by three key markets: South Korea accounted for 36.4% of exports in volume, Japan for 34.0%, and China for 15.4%. Together, these three countries represented 85.8% of total export flows.

In 2020, South-eastern Asia exported wood fuel worth 2,704 million US dollars, marking a 1.7% increase from 2019. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 31.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.6%. The most significant increase happened in 2018 at 29.6%, while 2019 saw essentially no change.

Import volumes of wood fuel into South-eastern Asia showed considerable volatility during the observed years. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 888 thousand cubic meters, while the lowest came in 2020 at just 70 thousand cubic meters—a 12.7-fold difference between peak and trough. This represents a substantial 92.2% decline from 2019 to 2020. The most dramatic increase occurred in 2018, when imports jumped by 535.2%.

The value of wood fuel imports into South-eastern Asia displayed irregular patterns, reflecting a volatile market. Imports reached their highest point in 2019 at 237 million US dollars, then fell to their lowest in 2017—a five-fold variation. In 2020, imports totaled 2,704 million US dollars, representing a 57.9% decrease compared to the previous year. The most significant increase was recorded in 2018 at 214.5%.

An analysis of import values from 2017 to 2020 reveals a widely distributed market. China and Australia each accounted for 3.5% of import value, while South Africa represented 1.7%. Together, these three countries made up just 8.7% of total import flows, with the remaining 91.3% spread across numerous other trading partners.
