Peru's wood fuel market reached 7.3 million m³ in 2019 before contracting by 11% to 6.5 million m³ in 2020. During this decline, international liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices rose and household purchasing power fell, making wood fuel a more affordable cooking option for many families. The selection of Repsol Perú to supply fuel for five years indicated shifts in the broader energy landscape that could influence competing fuels.

After stabilizing around 6.5–6.6 million m³ in 2021–2022, market volume increased to 6.8 million m³ in 2023. In 2021, high LPG costs and dollar depreciation led one in five Peruvian families to use wood for cooking, returning to levels seen a decade earlier. Health authorities repeatedly warned about pulmonary risks from wood smoke, yet economic necessity sustained demand throughout the period.

Peru's wood fuel production declined after two years of growth. In 2019, production reached its peak at 7 299 thousand cubic meters, but then fell by 10.6% to 6 524 thousand cubic meters in 2020. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 9.5%, which translates to an average annual decline of 3.3%. The largest year-on-year increase was recorded in 2019 at 1.2%.

Exports wood fuel from Peru

Peru's wood fuel exports have declined for three consecutive years. In 2020, exports totaled just 2 cubic meters, marking a 27.4% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports plummeted by 97.3%, with an average annual decline of 69.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Ecuador and Israel were the primary buyers of wood fuel from Peru, together accounting for 94.1% of total exports in volume. The remaining exports were distributed among various other countries.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Peru's wood fuel exports in value terms were Ecuador (52.6% of total), the United States (17.4%), and Costa Rica (11.7%). Together, these three countries accounted for 81.7% of total export flows.

In 2019, import volumes reached their lowest point at 3 453 cubic meters, but then surged by 102.5% to 6 994 cubic meters in 2020. The peak-to-trough ratio between these years was 2 times.
