Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2023, the wood fuel market volume in Mauritania grew steadily from 2 170 thousand m³ to 2 381 thousand m³. This increase was driven by the country's continued reliance on wood fuel and charcoal as the primary source of biomass for household cooking, with energy supply almost entirely dependent on imported oil and local traditional biomass.
In 2022, despite renewable energy reaching 14% of total production, wood fuel remained the dominant biomass source. Consumption in 2023 was estimated at around 0.6 m³ per capita per year, with 60% converted to charcoal. In 2024, the Mauritanian government implemented strategies to reduce wood consumption, including forest management, butanization of urban centers via SOMAGAZ, promotion of improved cookstoves, and a national tree week for reforestation awareness.
