The Caribbean market for wheat bran, sharps and residues saw a major contraction in 2020, with volume dropping by 38% to 208 thousand tons. This sharp decline coincided with the global COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted supply chains, milling operations, and feed demand across the region.

From 2021 onward, the market entered a phase of gradual recovery and stabilization. Volume rebounded to 222 thousand tons in 2021, then fluctuated within a narrow band, reaching 220 thousand tons in 2023. Production levels followed a similar pattern, while imports and exports remained subdued compared to pre-pandemic years.

Caribbean's production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 208.2 thousand tons, marking a sharp 37.2% drop from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 40.6%, with an average annual decline of 16.0%. The peak was in 2018, with 352.3 thousand tons, which also saw the largest increase of 0.4%.

Caribbean's production value of wheat bran, sharps, and residues has decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 39,004 thousand US dollars, reflecting a 33.6% decline compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value dropped by 28.6%, with an average annual decrease of 10.6%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 63,862 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 16.8%.

Caribbean's exports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues have fallen for the second year running. In 2020, the region exported 10,725 tons, showing a significant 12.7% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports declined by 21.8%, with an average annual drop of 7.9%. The peak was in 2018 at 15,555 tons, which saw the largest increase of 13.4%, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 21.0% decrease.

From 2017 to 2020, Suriname, Ecuador, and the United States were the top buyers of wheat bran, sharps, and residues from the Caribbean. Suriname accounted for 1.3% of exports in kind, Ecuador for 1.1%, and the United States for 0.9%, with their combined share reaching 3.3% of total exports.

Caribbean's export value of wheat bran, sharps, and residues has declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 2,009 thousand US dollars, indicating a modest 7.8% fall from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value decreased by 6%, with an average annual rate of 2.0%. The highest value was in 2018 at 2,820 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest increase of 31.9%, while the largest decline was in 2019 with a 22.7% drop.

From 2017 to 2020, Suriname, Ecuador, and the United States made the biggest contributions to the Caribbean's export value of wheat bran, sharps, and residues. From 2017 to 2020, Nigeria and the United States were the leading suppliers of wheat bran, sharps, and residues to the Caribbean, together accounting for 8.2% of total imports in kind.
