Earlier Report Observations

The market for wheat and meslin flour and cereals in Zimbabwe expanded from 230 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 341 thousand tonnes in 2021. State support through the Grain Marketing Board (GMB), which stocked wheat inputs for the winter cropping season, directly boosted domestic production. Simultaneously, the Russia-Ukraine war disrupted global supply chains, affecting imports and reinforcing the focus on local output.

After a contraction to 291 thousand tonnes in 2022, market volume recovered strongly to 389 thousand tonnes in 2023. This rebound was driven by a larger commercial wheat harvest, with significant deliveries to the GMB and the Zimbabwe Mercantile Exchange, reflecting higher production targets. The GMB's central role in market regulation, holding a 46% share in wheat distribution, helped channel supply effectively.

In 2024, the government declared a drought a national disaster, launching an aggressive wheat-based food security program. Winter wheat planting targets were increased, and import duties on wheat were removed to alleviate shortages, though this measure pressured local producers. Monetary policy changes, including the introduction of the ZiG currency, also influenced agricultural market conditions.
