Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2019, the market volume for wheat and meslin flour and cereals in Guatemala expanded from 437.8 thousand tons to 472.4 thousand tons. This growth was supported by a weaker Guatemalan quetzal against the US dollar, which favored wheat imports, and by rising international wheat prices that stimulated domestic market activity. However, in 2020, market volume contracted sharply to 390.9 thousand tons.
Recovery began in 2021 as market volume reached 426.6 thousand tons, driven by increased domestic demand for flour and higher input costs. The following year saw a strong surge to 480.4 thousand tons – the highest point in the period – as the war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russian exporters constrained global wheat supplies, prompting greater domestic production and leading the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food (MAGA) to recommend diversifying import sources to reduce dependency.
In 2023, market volume decreased to 448.0 thousand tons. This decline was attributed to rising fuel, input, and transportation costs, as well as adverse weather conditions that reduced local grain production. Continued pressure from international cereal prices, linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and global supply chain disruptions, also affected local wheat flour prices.
