Cameroon's watermelon production declined to 79.2 thousand metric tons in 2019 from 88.9 thousand metric tons in 2018. The 2018 framework law on food safety, which required authorization for human consumption and sanitary compliance, may have led to temporary adjustments in production practices. Despite this, watermelons remained an attractive crop for young farmers, with strong demand and new fields being established.

Production recovered to 94.2 thousand metric tons in 2020 and grew steadily, reaching 107.4 thousand metric tons by 2023. This expansion was supported by regulatory measures, including the 2022 list of authorized fertilizers that improved input quality for agriculture and the 2023 update to phytosanitary product registrations, which altered the approved crop protection methods available to growers.

In 2024, further steps were taken with the adoption of new Cameroonian agri-food standards and customs provisions in finance laws designed to protect local produce, aiming to strengthen market quality and support domestic production.
