Earlier Report Observations

The production of watermelons and melons in the Philippines began at 158.4 thousand tons in 2018, supported by the availability of strong hybrid varieties that enabled year-round cultivation and stabilized farmer incomes. In 2019, output dipped to 151.2 thousand tons as farmers adjusted planting schedules to avoid peak-season oversupply, while seed company KnownYou Seed Philippines, Inc. introduced new varieties like Diana, Buffalo, and Tiffany. By 2020, production recovered to 156.4 thousand tons.

From 2021 onward, production entered a declining phase, falling to 143.7 thousand tons in 2021 and further to 133.4 thousand tons in 2023. During this period, the Department of Agriculture pursued export diversification for high-value crops including melons, and consumer preference for fresh, seasonal produce strengthened, though these factors did not reverse the downward trend in domestic output.
