Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh plums and sloes in Peru underwent a significant contraction between 2018 and 2023, with total volume declining from 11 538 t to 6 651 t. This downward trend included a sharp 26% drop to 7 746 t in 2020, a partial recovery to 8 797 t in 2021, and subsequent declines in the following years.

Domestic production fell from 8 483 t to 5 303 t over the same period, while import volumes fluctuated, starting at 3 056 t in 2018 and reaching a low of 885 t in 2020 before modestly recovering. The reduction in both local output and foreign supplies drove the overall market contraction.

In 2024, import volumes stood at 1 108 t, down from the previous year. That same year, Peruvian authorities officially reopened the market to Chilean apples and stone fruits, including plums, through a regulatory change published in May 2024, which facilitates future import procedures. Additionally, the development of plum cultivation in the Peruvian highlands was noted as a potential long-term opportunity for domestic production.
