Syria's walnut market volume grew from 13 617 t in 2018 to 16 232 t in 2023. This expansion occurred despite significant challenges, including the disruptive impact of the Syrian war on agriculture, which forced thousands of farmers to flee and deteriorated the sector. Earlier in the period, increased government attention to agriculture, with development of infrastructure and water resources, helped expand irrigated land and the use of modern machinery, providing some support to production.

Market value experienced sharp swings primarily due to price volatility. In 2021, local economic factors drove nut prices to record levels, pushing the market value to 76.6 million $ even as physical volume saw a slight decline. Conversely, in 2023, a rapid 50% drop in nut prices in Aleppo within a month reflected high market volatility and caused the market value to fall to 80.4 million $, despite a small increase in volume.

After two years of decline, Syria's walnut production rebounded in 2020, reaching 11 072 tonnes. This marked a 4.8% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, overall production fell by 10.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 10 569 tonnes, which represented the largest annual decline of 12.9%.
