Earlier Report Observations

The volume of the virgin olive oil market in Brazil grew from 187 thousand tons in 2018 to 224 thousand tons in 2020. This expansion was primarily driven by increasing consumer awareness of the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil, which boosted demand. The trend was further accelerated in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic heightened the focus on healthy and natural foods, leading to increased consumption of virgin olive oil.

From 2021, the total market volume began to contract, falling to 57 thousand tons by 2023. Adverse weather conditions in Europe, a key supply region, reduced olive oil production, leading to higher global prices and significantly constraining imports into Brazil. Concurrently, a high rate of adulteration in imported olive oils undermined consumer confidence and contributed to the sharp decline in import volumes. By 2023, continued climatic challenges in Europe further limited the availability of imported oil, sustaining pressure on the overall market size.
