Earlier Report Observations

Production of uranium ores in Southern Asia began at 539 t in 2018, supported by the ongoing expansion and modernization of Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) mines and processing plants in Jharkhand, including new facilities at Turamdih. Output fell to 424 t in 2019, coinciding with India's long-term contract for uranium concentrate imports from Uzbekistan, reflecting a strategic shift to supplement domestic supply.

Production recovered to 516 t in 2020 and surged to a peak of 666 t in 2021. The market stabilized at 665 t in 2022, maintaining the high output level achieved the previous year.

From 2023, the regulatory framework was strengthened by the Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill, granting the central government exclusive control over auctioning critical mineral leases including uranium. The following year saw major resource additions, with significant uranium deposit discoveries in Rajasthan's Sikar district and a state-of-the-art Magnetite Recovery Plant commissioned at UCIL's Turamdih unit, enhancing resource efficiency amid rising global uranium prices and national nuclear energy goals.
