The market volume for unroasted, not decaffeinated coffee in Nigeria fluctuated between 1 710 t and 2 359 t from 2018 to 2023. After reaching a high of 2 359 t in 2019, volume dropped sharply to 1 710 t in 2020, then recovered to over 2 200 t in 2021 and 2022 before easing to 2 014 t in 2023.

Domestic production remained relatively stable, hovering around 1 800 t annually with a slight downward trend. The persistent lack of a national coffee policy has hurt local farmers, contributing to stagnant output and leading to a reliance on imports to meet demand. Import volumes varied significantly, peaking at 865 t in 2020.

Consumer demand has been influenced by ongoing urbanization, a growing middle class, and the rise of specialty coffee culture. The expansion of retail channels and coffee shops has improved product accessibility, particularly supporting consumption of instant coffee. However, without a comprehensive policy framework, the local production sector faces challenges in expanding to capitalize on these trends.

Nigeria's production of unroasted, not decaffeinated coffee has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 1,806 tonnes, marking a 2.5% decrease compared to the previous year. During 2017-2020, China, India, and the United Kingdom consistently led as the top sources for Nigeria's imports in kind. China held 49.8% of the volume, India 23.3%, and the United Kingdom 8.0%, together comprising 81.2% of total imports.
