The Spanish market for fresh, chilled, or frozen turkey meat and offal experienced steady growth in volume from 195.5 thousand tons in 2018 to 218.4 thousand tons in 2020. This upward trend reversed in 2021, with the market size contracting to 202.8 thousand tons, before recovering to 215.5 thousand tons in 2022 and showing a slight contraction to 211.9 thousand tons in 2023. In value terms, the market expanded significantly from 439.6 million USD in 2018 to 683.6 million USD in 2023, with a particularly sharp increase of 179.5 million USD occurring in 2022.

From late 2022, the market began operating under new national hygiene rules for the retail sector, enacted via Royal Decree 1021/2022. This regulation allowed the freezing of fresh meat in retail establishments and established specific labeling and traceability requirements for fresh, chilled, or frozen meat, replacing the previous 2003 decree. Concurrently, updated EU rules made it mandatory to indicate the country of origin on labels for poultry meat, including turkey, affecting product information for consumers.

The ongoing implementation and interpretation of the 2022 decree continued to influence retail operations for turkey meat through 2023. During this period, the market volume stabilized just above 210 thousand tons, while its value remained steady at approximately 683.6 million USD.

Following two years of growth, Spain's turkey meat and offal production value declined. In 2020, the output was valued at 463.4 M $ US, down 6.0% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 27.4%, with an average annual rate of 8.4%. The peak value occurred in 2019 at 492.8 M $ US, while the largest annual increase was in 2018 at 19.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, the top buyers of turkey meat and offal from Spain were Portugal, accounting for 19.6% of exports in kind, France at 19.5%, and Benin at 13.7%. Together, these three countries represented 52.8% of Spain's total exports in kind.

After two years of growth, the value of turkey meat and offal exports from Spain decreased. In 2020, exports totaled 105.3 M $ US, down 13.5% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value increased by 3.4%, with an average annual rate of 1.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 121.7 M $ US, and the largest annual increase occurred in 2019 at 12.1%.
