The French treenuts market exhibited fluctuating volumes from 2018 to 2020. Starting at 149.8 thousand tons in 2018, the market declined to 141.3 thousand tons in 2019, a drop partly linked to unfavorable spring and summer weather that year which limited domestic fruit precocity and production. A rebound to 157.5 thousand tons occurred in 2020, supported by an exceptional harvest that boosted supply, even as the Covid-19 pandemic reduced demand from bars and airlines, putting downward pressure on prices.

Market growth resumed in 2021, with volume reaching 163.3 thousand tons, propelled by continued strong global demand for nuts and the development of specialized domestic organic segments, exemplified by Carrefour's three-year price and volume commitment to structure a French organic almond sector. Volume peaked at 167.4 thousand tons in 2022; however, in value terms, the market stabilized around $972.6 million US, influenced by post-pandemic shifts such as reduced remote work, a return to out-of-home consumption, and broader inflationary pressures which tempered sector turnover.

In 2023, the market contracted significantly to 144.2 thousand tons in volume, with its value falling to $837.1 million US, marking a notable downturn after the previous years' expansion.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, Germany, and Spain were the primary buyers of French treenuts, accounting for 27.7%, 19.9%, and 18.5% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 66.0% of France's total treenut exports by volume.
