Tomato production in Turkey increased from 12.15 million tonnes in 2018 to 13.2 million tonnes in 2020, driven by the continuous expansion of protected cultivation, which accounted for 28-32% of total output. This growth was concentrated in key regions like Antalya, Bursa, and Manisa, with contract farming for the processing industry providing additional support.

Export dynamics significantly influenced production volumes. A 43% surge in fresh tomato export value in 2021 helped stabilize output despite a slight domestic market contraction. Subsequent Russian import quotas and Turkey's own export ban from April 2023 redirected trade flows to European markets like Poland, Romania, Germany, and the Netherlands, maintaining export volumes around 500-600 thousand tonnes.

Production stabilized around 13 million tonnes in 2021-2022 and rose to 13.3 million tonnes in 2023, supported by ongoing growth in greenhouse areas and seed development efforts for disease-resistant varieties. The Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters' Union actively engaged in export policy, advocating against trade restrictions.

Turkey's tomato production increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 13,204 thousand tonnes of tomatoes, marking a 2.8% improvement compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 3.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.2%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 12,150 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 4.7%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the biggest increase at 5.7%.

Turkey's tomato production value rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 7,940 million US dollars, showing a modest increase of 9.1% from the year before. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 12.8%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 4.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 6,644 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 5.6%. The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 9.6%.

After two years of growth, Turkey's tomato export volume declined. In 2020, exports stood at 518.9 thousand tonnes, reflecting a 3.0% drop year-over-year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 534.7 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 0.9%.
