The volume of the fresh tomato market in the Philippines showed relative stability from 2018 to 2023, moving within a range of 216 thousand tons to 225 thousand tons. A slight dip in 2020 coincided with a period of long-term increasing farmgate and retail prices, influenced by shifts in labor and the non-tradable nature of many agricultural products which affected supply conditions.

A more notable 4% contraction to 216.6 thousand tons occurred in 2022, driven by supply gaps and the impact of typhoons that disrupted production and caused price surges. In response, initiatives like the DOST-PCAARRD's programs and the April 2022 establishment of an LGU-led consolidation facility aimed to stabilize the supply chain by improving post-harvest storage and enabling direct farmer-to-institutional buyer connections.

Market volume recovered to 219.3 thousand tons in 2023. This rebound took place despite a reported 1.8% production decrease in the April-June quarter, as efforts by the Department of Agriculture urging better farmer coordination for direct market linkage likely aided in stabilizing the supply flow. Concurrently, rising fuel prices elevated transportation costs for traders, adding pressure to the overall market.

Following two consecutive years of growth, tomato production in the Philippines experienced a decline. In 2020, the country produced 222.0 thousand tons of tomatoes, marking a slight decrease of 0.6% compared to the previous year. The peak production level was recorded in 2019 at 223.3 thousand tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 1.1%.
