The market volume for fresh tomatoes in South America experienced a gradual decline from 7.6 million tons in 2018 to 7.2 million tons in 2020. This contraction was primarily influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which disrupted supply chains and temporarily constrained production despite increased household demand for fresh, healthy foods.

Following the pandemic, the market recovered to 7.4 million tons in 2021 and stabilized near that level in 2022. A significant expansion occurred in 2023, with the market volume reaching 8.0 million tons. This growth was supported by state investments in Brazil to reduce emissions at processing facilities, enhancing operational efficiency, alongside the broader adoption of disease-resistant tomato varieties and improvements in logistics and commercialization.

Tomato production in South America has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 7,171 thousand tons of tomatoes, representing a 1.5% year-over-year decrease. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 2.9%, with an average annual decline of 1.0%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 7,553 thousand tons, which saw a 2.3% increase. The largest drop occurred in 2019, with a 3.6% decrease.

Exports tomato from South America

Exports in kind, t

South America's tomato export volumes have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 3,491 tons, marking a dramatic 46.1% rise compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, exports decreased by 6.3%, with an average annual decline of 2.2%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 1,601 tons, which saw a significant 57.1% drop. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a 49.2% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Curacao and Aruba remained the primary destinations in the geographical structure of tomato exports in kind, together accounting for 2.4% of total export flows.

In 2020, South America's tomato export value totaled 5,287 thousand US dollars, which is 43.8% higher than the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 11.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 3,677 thousand US dollars, which saw a 28.5% decline.

Between 2017 and 2020, the partner landscape for tomato exports in value terms was diverse. Curacao accounted for 6.7% of export value, Aruba for 3.7%, and France for 2.1%, together making up only 12.5% of total flows. The remaining 87.5% was distributed among many other countries.

After two years of decline, South America's tomato import volumes have increased. In 2020, imports reached 4,080 tons, representing a 52.9% year-over-year rise. Between 2017 and 2020, however, imports decreased by 21.3%, equating to an average annual decline of 7.7%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 2,669 tons, which saw a 31.3% drop.

The market showed significant volatility during these years. Imports peaked in 2017 and reached their lowest point in 2019, with a 1.8-fold difference between these years. In 2020, South America imported a total of 6,217 thousand US dollars worth of tomatoes, equivalent to a sharp 73.9% increase compared to the previous year.
