Foreign capital entering processing units strengthened international competitiveness, supporting increased exports and contributing to the market expansion.

Market volume contracted to 1.4 million tons in 2020 as the industry adapted to European Union goals aiming to reduce pesticide use by 50% by 2030, which influenced agricultural practices. Production rebounded sharply to 1.7 million tons in 2021 when the cultivated area for tomatoes expanded by 17.7%, reflecting greater integration between growers and processors through producer organizations that handle about 80% of commercialized volume.

After a decrease to 1.4 million tons in 2022, the market recovered to 1.6 million tons in 2023. This expansion was supported by a 16% rise in the area under contract between farmers and industry, alongside growing processing capacity and international demand for Portuguese tomato products, particularly concentrated tomato.

In 2021, Portugal produced 1 810 thousand tonnes of tomatoes, marking a 29.4% increase compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, production grew by 36.1%, which translates to an annualized rate of 10.8%. The most significant decline occurred in 2020, when production fell by 8.6%.
