Earlier Report Observations

The fresh tomato market in Malaysia recorded a volume of 157.6 thousand tons in 2018, the same year that saw the launch of the Malaysia Best quality labeling initiative for both local and export markets. However, volume fell to 134.5 thousand tons in 2019. The market rebounded to 155.3 thousand tons in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic shifted consumption toward home cooking and greenhouse technology allowed for more consistent production. A further slight increase to 157.1 thousand tons followed in 2021.

Consumer demand for higher quality and safer food continued to shape the market, contributing to growth to 164.6 thousand tons in 2022, with producers focusing on improved packaging and harvesting at optimal maturity. In 2023, despite strong demand, supply shortages led to a reduction in volume to 161.0 thousand tons.
