Toluene market in Poland

The toluene market volume in Poland grew from 21,041 t in 2018 to a peak of 23,666 t in 2021, before declining to 22,488 t in 2022. In value terms, the market experienced greater volatility, dropping sharply to $11.4 million in 2020, then recovering to $18.2 million in 2021 and reaching $26.6 million in 2022.

Domestic production of toluene fell consistently from 13,239 t in 2018 to 8,835 t in 2022, increasing reliance on imports. Imports remained the primary supply source, fluctuating between 22,000 t and 23,700 t annually. Exports declined substantially over the period, especially after 2022, freeing more material for domestic consumption.

In 2023 and 2024, import volumes rose slightly to 23,727 t then fell to 22,101 t, while exports collapsed to 4,101 t in 2023 and 2,140 t in 2024, indicating a significant shift in trade flows and a potential reorientation of the Polish market.

Toluene exports from Poland declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 11 110 tonnes, down 11.7% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 40.8%, with an average annual decline of 16.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Hungary and Germany together accounted for 81.2% of total exports in volume, while other countries formed a more diversified but less significant portion.

Toluene imports into Poland declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Poland imported 22 230 tonnes, a slight decrease of 1.1% year-on-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 49.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 14.3%. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 23 258 tonnes, with the largest increase of 56.1% that year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 3.4%.
