This decline was primarily driven by a multi-year drop in domestic consumption, which began before the pandemic and was exacerbated by global supply chain disruptions linked to COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021. These factors reduced overall availability and demand within the country.

Despite a sharp 130% increase in domestic production volumes in 2018, this expansion did not offset the broader market contraction. In the later part of the period, the market was also influenced by external trade dynamics, including EU anti-dumping duties on Chinese TiO₂ imports, which likely affected supply conditions and pricing in Sweden, contributing to the continued downward trend in market value and volume.

The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 19 827 tonnes, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 with a 9.5% decrease.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Norway, and Italy were the top destinations for Sweden's exports of TiO2 pigments and preparations in volume terms.
