From 2020 to 2023, the Swedish printing inks market shrank significantly in physical volume, falling from 12 894 tonnes to 7 464 tonnes, a total contraction of 42%. In value terms, the market initially grew, reaching 59.2 million US dollars in 2022 from 57.5 million in 2020, before declining to 53.5 million in 2023.

The decline in market volume was steady each year, with the sharpest drop occurring in 2023 when volume fell by 27.5%. Market value showed resilience in 2021 and 2022 despite lower volumes, suggesting a shift toward higher-value products or increased prices. Import volumes decreased from 9 201 tonnes in 2020 to 5 293 tonnes in 2023, reducing domestic supply.

Domestic production of printing inks decreased in 2023, dropping to 12 980 tonnes from 20 052 tonnes the previous year. Exports also fell, with both trends aligning with the reduction in market size over the period.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports declined by 12%, with an average annual growth rate of -4.2%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 13 870 tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 18 159 tonnes. The most significant increase occurred in 2019, with a rise of 30.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Sweden's exports of printing inks in volume terms were distributed across a diverse range of partner countries. Germany accounted for 15.5% of these exports, Norway for 11.4%, and Finland for 10.6%. Together, these three countries represented just 37.4% of the total export flows.

The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 5 659 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 17.1%. The most substantial increase occurred in 2019, with a jump of 59.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany was the leading source of Sweden's printing inks imports in volume terms, accounting for 48.8% of the total. The Netherlands followed with 17.0%, and Finland with 11.1%.
