Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the market for tea in packings ≤3 kg saw initial growth, with volume reaching 1 801 thousand tons in 2019, supported by the Tea Board of India's scheme to promote packaged tea exports and the adoption of stand-up pouches that improved shelf efficiency. The COVID-19 pandemic then disrupted global supply chains and altered consumption patterns, contributing to a market contraction to 1 632 thousand tons in 2020.

Recovery began in 2021, lifting market volume to 1 747 thousand tons and later to 1 757 thousand tons by 2023. This rebound was driven by a strong increase in tea exports, which rose by 17.57% to 231.08 million kg in 2022, alongside a sustained consumer shift toward premium, organic, and green teas. Continued packaging innovations focusing on eco-friendly materials and government digitalization efforts for tea trade further supported market expansion.

In 2024, industry factors indicate a stabilization of export values following prior fluctuations and an ongoing consumer interest in specialty and organic teas. Government policies remain focused on export promotion and supply chain improvements, continuing the trends observed in earlier years.
