Earlier Report Observations

The tea market in Oceania grew from 21 188 metric tons in 2018 to a peak of 22 326 metric tons in 2021, before stabilizing at 22 231 metric tons in 2022 and then contracting sharply to 18 777 metric tons in 2023, a 15% drop from the previous year.

Domestic production remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 7 100 and 7 500 metric tons annually. Imports, which constitute the bulk of market supply, increased from 14 458 metric tons in 2018 to over 15 000 metric tons in subsequent years, but fell to 12 436 metric tons in 2023, a key driver of the market contraction. Exports, though modest, rose from 573 metric tons in 2018 to 1 203 metric tons in 2024, indicating growing external trade.

Changing consumer preferences in Australia, where tea consumption has been declining since 2017, reduced overall demand in the region. This shift in consumption patterns, alongside global trends towards premium and sustainably packaged teas, contributed to the market adjustment after 2021.
