Taro production in the MENA region rose steadily from 121.4 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 178.5 thousand tonnes in 2022, with the market size expanding from 135.8 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 190.2 thousand tonnes in 2022. This growth unfolded against a backdrop of regional economic slowdown in 2019, triggered by voluntary oil production cuts and geopolitical tensions, yet demand for essential foodstuffs appeared sustained.

A sharp reversal occurred in 2023 as production fell to 141.2 thousand tonnes and the total market contracted to 147.8 thousand tonnes. Imports also dropped markedly to 7.1 thousand tonnes that year before rebounding to 17.5 thousand tonnes in 2024, a shift that coincided with the Gaza-Israel conflict's disruption to regional supply chains and food market stability.

Concurrently, increasing urbanization and a trend towards healthier lifestyles in the MENA region boosted demand for frozen and chilled vegetables, including taro. Advances in automation and multi-temperature storage infrastructure further facilitated the distribution of these temperature-sensitive products.

Taro imports into the MENA region have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 15 132 tons, reflecting a 15.1% gain compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 14.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.5%. The minimum value was in 2018 at 12 316 tons, when imports declined by 7.1%.
