The tallow market in Eastern Africa contracted from 2018 to 2021, with total volume falling from 10 612 т to 6 676 т. Domestic production declined steadily over this period, while import levels remained relatively low.

Market volume rebounded in 2022, reaching 7 847 т, driven primarily by a sharp increase in imports to 3 644 т. This recovery coincided with reported fluctuations in livestock production and sustained consumer demand for tallow in Kenya, which supported market activity.

Growth continued in 2023, with the market expanding to 10 124 т as imports surged further to 5 626 т, returning total volume to above its 2018 level.

Eastern Africa's tallow production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 4 625 tonnes of tallow, representing a year-on-year decrease of 25.6%. From 2017 to 2020, production fell by 58.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -25.2%.

According to industry research, there were no tallow exports from Eastern Africa between 2017 and 2020.

Eastern Africa's tallow imports have also decreased for three consecutive years. In 2020, imports totaled 2 200 tonnes, down 5.3% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import volumes declined by 34.6%, corresponding to an annualized rate of -13.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, two countries—South Africa and Australia—dominated Eastern Africa's tallow imports in volume terms, while other markets played relatively minor roles individually.

Imports in value, K $ US

Following two years of decline, tallow imports to Eastern Africa rebounded in value terms. In 2020, imports reached 1 889 thousand US dollars, marking a 9.4% increase from 2019. However, between 2017 and 2020, import values overall decreased by 30.2%, equivalent to an annualized rate of -11.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 728 thousand US dollars, which also saw the sharpest annual decline of 32.1%.

Between 2017 and 2020, South Africa and Australia together consistently represented 92.7% of Eastern Africa's tallow import value, highlighting a highly concentrated market with numerous smaller suppliers making up the remainder.
