Earlier Report Observations

Tallow production in Asia held steady at 267.3 thousand tonnes in 2018 and 267.8 thousand tonnes in 2019 before declining to 219.9 thousand tonnes in 2020. Output then recovered strongly, reaching 330.1 thousand tonnes by 2022. The market volume, recorded from 2020, followed a similar volatile pattern, rising from 362.5 thousand tonnes in 2020 to a peak of 427.8 thousand tonnes in 2021, then falling back to 351.5 thousand tonnes in 2022.

Production expanded further to 339.2 thousand tonnes in 2023, sustained by robust demand for tallow as a biofuel feedstock, driven by the global shift towards renewable energy and supportive policies. The overall market volume, however, saw a slight contraction to 343.9 thousand tonnes that year, primarily due to lower imports. In 2024, import volumes surged to 202.5 thousand tonnes, reflecting intensified demand from Asia's biofuel sector, particularly in China and South Korea, alongside improved trade access after China removed key barriers for Australian meat processors in December 2024.
