Sweet potato was traditionally an overlooked crop in Yemen, with limited cultivated area and often used as animal feed due to its low price. Its high nutritional value and adaptability to harsh environmental conditions, however, made it a viable option for farmers in rural areas. This background contributed to a relatively stable market volume, which gently declined from 327.6 t in 2018 to 322.2 t in 2020.

Market size then increased to 331.2 t in 2021, dipped to 318.5 t in 2022, and reached 335.2 t in 2023. The appearance of imports, though modest, supplemented domestic production, with imports growing to 13.7 t in 2023. Exports began in 2023 at a negligible 0.5 t.

In 2024, the Yemeni Standards, Metrology and Quality Control Authority issued a general guide for requirements on fresh vegetables and fruits, which influenced market standards and export procedures. Economic stagnation and crises in Houthi-controlled regions constrained agricultural market development.
