The sweet potato market in Cameroon grew from 483 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 525 thousand tonnes in 2019, supported by agricultural modernization and the introduction of high-yield varieties through cooperation with German and international partners. A minor contraction to 517 thousand tonnes in 2020 reflected temporary disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic on production and distribution.

Beginning in 2021, the war in Ukraine and rising wheat prices led bakeries to adopt sweet potato flour, creating new local demand. This import-substitution drive, alongside new food quality standards and legislative steps to professionalize organic production, helped lift the market to 579 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 607 thousand tonnes in 2023.

In 2024, the market framework continued to evolve with the pilot launch of the Plaine centrale project to develop arable land and the adoption of 25 new food and technological norms aimed at improving product competitiveness, reinforcing the policy shift toward local alternatives that began in prior years.

Sweet potato production in Cameroon rose for two years before declining. In 2020, production reached 517.3 thousand tonnes, down 1.5% from 2019.
