The market for sunflower-seed oilcake in Northern Africa experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Consumption reached 593.7 thousand tonnes in 2019, then declined steadily to a low of 420.9 thousand tonnes in 2022, before rebounding sharply to 573.6 thousand tonnes in 2023. This recovery coincided with adaptations in global trade flows following the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, which initially disrupted supplies from two of the world's largest producers.

Import volumes, which constitute the majority of the market, mirrored this pattern. They grew to 552.3 thousand tonnes in 2019, fell to 382.0 thousand tonnes by 2022, and then surged by 41% to 539.3 thousand tonnes in 2023. The conflict forced a reorganization of international supply chains, which, after an initial period of adjustment, led to increased shipments to the region. Imports continued to rise in 2024, reaching 683.6 thousand tonnes, indicating sustained market demand.

Domestic production played a smaller role, declining from 79.2 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 34.3 thousand tonnes in 2023. This downward trend in local output further increased the region's reliance on imported oilcake to meet consumption needs.

Sunflower-seed oilcake production in Northern Africa declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 41 952 tonnes, which was 1.6% lower than in 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 38.3%, with an average annual decline of 14.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 79 238 tonnes. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, when production decreased by 46.2%, while the largest increase was seen in 2018 with a 16.6% rise.

Exports of sunflower-seed oilcake from Northern Africa grew for the second consecutive year. In 2019, export volumes reached 1.2 thousand tonnes, marking a substantial 149.5% increase compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2019, exports surged by 4 297.8%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 253.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the export market was highly concentrated, with Turkey alone accounting for 98.3% of all exports in volume terms.

Northern Africa's sunflower-seed oilcake exports increased for the second year running. In 2019, the region exported 0.3 million US dollars' worth of sunflower-seed oilcake, representing a sharp 239.0% rise from the year before. Over the 2017-2019 period, exports grew by 6 353.3%, with an average annual increase of 301.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, nearly all the value of sunflower-seed oilcake exports from Northern Africa was linked to Turkey, which held a 92.8% share of total export flows.

The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 472.7 thousand tonnes. The most significant drop occurred in 2018 with a 15.8% decrease, while the largest increase was in 2019 with a 16.8% rise.

During 2017-2020, Ukraine was the primary source of sunflower-seed oilcake imports to Northern Africa, supplying 73.4% of the total volume. The remainder was distributed among other countries.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 11.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 115.0 million US dollars, while the highest was in 2019 at 135.3 million US dollars. The largest increase occurred in 2019 with a 17.6% rise.
