Earlier Report Observations
The U.S. market volume for sunflower, safflower, and cottonseed oil showed considerable variation from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 452 thousand tons in 2018, it dipped to 406 thousand tons the following year before jumping to 546 thousand tons in 2020. After a contraction to 477 thousand tons in 2021, the market reached its highest point at 588 thousand tons in 2022, then moderated to 500 thousand tons in 2023.
The peak in market volume in 2022 coincided with significant global supply disruptions. Geopolitical conflicts reduced sunflower oil availability from major producers like Ukraine and Russia, leading to a sharp increase in U.S. import volumes to 271 thousand tons that year. This external pressure was partly offset by a strategic partnership formed between Bunge and the BZ Group, a large network of oilseed farmers, which aimed to strengthen domestic supply chains and support market growth.
Entering 2024, the market environment was influenced by changes in the biofuel sector and global price trends. The expiration of the U.S. blenders tax credit for renewable diesel in December 2024 diminished the economic incentive to use vegetable oils like sunflower oil as a feedstock. At the same time, the average U.S. import price for this oil fell by 9.4%, reflecting improved global crop outlooks and a gradual easing of the supply shocks that had characterized the previous years.
