Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, the market volume for sunflower, safflower, and cottonseed oil in India expanded from 2 444 thousand tonnes to 2 623 thousand tonnes. This growth coincided with the country's strong position as a major producer of oilseeds, including sunflower and cottonseed, cultivated in states like Karnataka. Significant consumer price increases for edible oils during this period reflected heightened demand, supporting the market's expansion.

From 2020 to 2022, market volume experienced fluctuations, reaching 2 574 thousand tonnes in 2021 before declining to 2 440 thousand tonnes in 2022. Production levels varied during these years, while import volumes showed volatility, indicating adjustments in supply and demand dynamics without a single dominant driver.

In 2023, the market contracted sharply to 1 670 thousand tonnes. The following year, the government launched the National Mission on Edible Oils - Oilseeds with a Rs. 10 103 crore outlay aimed at boosting domestic production of sunflower, safflower, and cottonseed oil. Simultaneously, 432 high-yielding varieties were notified for cultivation, and industry investments in new manufacturing plants progressed, alongside a reported 16% decrease in edible oil imports in August 2024, pointing toward a structural shift in the sector.
