Earlier Report Observations

The Australian market for sunflower and safflower oil expanded from 68 723 tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 85 526 tonnes in 2020. This growth was supported by a consistent rise in domestic production, which increased from 8 260 tonnes to 10 180 tonnes, and by growing imports, which reached 76 531 tonnes in 2020.

After 2020, market volume contracted to 72 041 tonnes in 2021 as imports fell sharply to 60 256 tonnes. A partial recovery followed in 2022, lifting the market to 78 581 tonnes, but a steep decline in imports to 40 707 tonnes drove the volume down to 55 746 tonnes in 2023.

Australia's position as a major global producer of safflower oil provided a foundation for domestic output throughout the period. Concurrently, significant volatility in export prices for cottonseed oil, a competing vegetable oil, introduced an element of uncertainty into the broader oils market.
