Following a decline to 4.6 million tonnes in 2019, Kenya's sugar cane market volume expanded rapidly, reaching 8.8 million tonnes in 2022. This represented a growth of over 90% across three years, indicating a strong production surge.

The market contracted sharply by 37% to 5.6 million tonnes in 2023. This drop was driven by a four-month ban on sugar cane milling imposed by the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) in 2023 to address cane shortages. The ban allowed only factories with mature cane to process, which severely curtailed production volumes.

Kenya's sugar cane production reached 6 811 K t in 2020, marking a significant 47.9% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 43.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 12.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 4 606 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 12.5%.

Sugar cane exports from Kenya declined for the second year in a row. In 2019, exports totaled 100 kg, representing an 89.4% drop compared to 2018. From 2017 to 2019, exports fell by 90.8%, which translates to an annualized decrease of 54.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and Burundi were the primary markets for Kenya's sugar cane exports in kind. Germany accounted for 56.0% of exports, the Netherlands for 20.3%, and Burundi for 7.0%, together making up 83.4% of total export flows.

Sugar cane exports from Kenya continued to decline for the second consecutive year. In 2019, export value stood at 70 US dollars, reflecting a sharp 97.3% decrease year-over-year. Over the period from 2017 to 2019, exports dropped by 97.4%, equivalent to an annualized rate of decline of 70.4%.
