Earlier Report Observations

Sugar cane production in Asia showed considerable movement between 2018 and 2023. After a modest increase to 808.8 million tonnes in 2019, output contracted significantly to 731.0 million tonnes in 2020. A consistent recovery then took hold, with production climbing to 766.4 million tonnes in 2021 and 819.7 million tonnes in 2022, before reaching 871.4 million tonnes in 2023. The market volume, closely aligned with production, followed a similar path, growing from 731.0 million tonnes in 2020 to 871.4 million tonnes by the end of the period.

The market expansion in 2023 was underpinned by specific industrial actions and demand shifts. Bunge's $120 million investment to upgrade refining facilities enhanced processing efficiency and supported higher output. Concurrently, rising consumption from the bakery, confectionery, dairy, and beverage sectors across major Asian economies like India and China provided sustained demand, pulling market volume upward.
