The sugar beet market in Turkey experienced considerable fluctuations from 2018 to 2023. Production increased from 17 436 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 18 054 thousand tonnes in 2019, largely due to shifts in consumer lifestyles and eating habits that boosted domestic consumption. This was followed by a significant rise to 23 026 thousand tonnes in 2020, supported by the crop's strategic importance and ongoing state intervention, even within a system of production quotas.

A decline to 17 767 thousand tonnes occurred in 2021, influenced by low global sugarcane prices which undermined the competitiveness of domestic beet sugar. The market recovered to 19 254 thousand tonnes in 2022, aided by government-established purchase prices critical for producer sustainability and a quota system determined by presidential decree and shared between state-owned Türkşeker and private companies like Kayseri Şeker. Production then surged to 25 250 thousand tonnes in 2023, a growth that took place amid challenges such as production costs exceeding market prices, which pressured the financial stability of sugar factories.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey ranked as the world's fifth-largest producer of sugar beet.

Turkey's sugar beet production grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 23,026 thousand tonnes, marking a sharp 27.5% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 8.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.9%. The lowest output was recorded in 2018 at 17,436 thousand tonnes, which represented the largest decline of 17.6% during this timeframe.

Exports sugar beet to Turkey

In 2020, Turkey's sugar beet exports reached 2,299 kilograms, a staggering 2,048.6% increase year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports surged by 3,731.7%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 237.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Cyprus was the primary market for Turkey's sugar beet exports, accounting for 85.2% of total volume. Other destinations played a relatively minor role.

Over 2017-2020, Azerbaijan (39.3% of export value), Germany (25.7%), and Cyprus (23.3%) were the top contributors to Turkey's sugar beet exports in monetary terms. Together, they accounted for 88.4% of total export value.
