The market volume for sucrose in solid form in Northern Africa showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. It began at 5 939 thousand tonnes in 2018, then contracted sharply to 5 052 thousand tonnes the following year. A rebound in 2020 lifted the volume to 5 737 thousand tonnes, and growth continued to a peak of 6 131 thousand tonnes in 2021.

After the 2021 peak, the market volume stabilized near 6 035 thousand tonnes in 2022 before declining to 5 617 thousand tonnes in 2023. This later downturn occurred alongside a persistent decrease in domestic production, which fell from 5 438 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 4 927 thousand tonnes in 2023. Higher imports, particularly in 2021 and 2022, helped compensate for lower local output until they also decreased in 2023.

Over the full period, the market concluded lower than it started, driven by a sustained drop in production and fluctuating trade volumes that shaped overall supply.

After two years of decline, Northern Africa's solid sucrose production rebounded. In 2019, production hit its lowest point at 4 829 thousand tonnes, marking an 11.2% decrease. The following year, in 2020, output rose to 5 448 thousand tonnes, representing a 12.8% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, overall production fell by 4.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.5%.

Following two years of contraction, the value of solid sucrose production in Northern Africa saw a significant upturn. In 2019, production value reached its minimum at 1 939 million US dollars, reflecting a sharp 30.2% drop. By 2020, this value surged to 2 574 million US dollars, a substantial 32.8% rise compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, the overall production value declined by 18%, translating to an annualized rate of 6.4%.

Solid sucrose exports from Northern Africa grew for the second consecutive year. In 2018, exports fell to their lowest level at 1 232 thousand tonnes, a 15.1% decrease. By 2020, exports climbed to 1 481 thousand tonnes, showing a robust 11.8% increase from 2019.

Between 2017 and 2020, Northern Africa's solid sucrose exports in volume were distributed across a diverse range of partners. Turkey accounted for 13.7% of exports, Syria for 7.7%, and Jordan for 7.1%, together making up 28.4% of total flows. The remaining 71.6% was spread among numerous smaller markets.

After two years of decline, the value of solid sucrose exports from Northern Africa increased. In 2018, exports experienced their largest drop of 21.1%. In 2019, the value hit a low of 532 million US dollars. By 2020, exports rose to 700 million US dollars, up 31.6% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 12.3%, with an annualized rate of 4.3%.
