Domestic production of chemically pure sucrose in Croatia fell sharply from 280 thousand tons in 2018 to 108 thousand tons in 2023, a decline of more than 60%. This drop was steady across the period, with a particularly steep reduction in 2019.

While production contracted, imports of sucrose tripled from 36 thousand tons in 2018 to 119 thousand tons in 2024, partly offsetting the lower local output. Exports moved in the opposite direction, falling from 214 thousand tons to 72 thousand tons over the same span, indicating a shift in the trade balance.

The total market volume for sucrose in Croatia fluctuated, peaking at 138 thousand tons in 2020 before dropping to 96 thousand tons in 2021. It then stabilized at around 111 to 113 thousand tons in 2022 and 2023, reflecting variable demand and supply chain adjustments.

Croatia's production of sucrose in solid form has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 182.5 thousand tonnes, marking a modest 7.0% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 42.2%, which translates to an average annual decline of 16.7%.

Croatia's exports of sucrose in solid form have decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 86.4 thousand tonnes, representing a sharp 31.0% drop compared to the year before. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports declined by 55%, with a compound annual growth rate of -23.4%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 213.8 thousand tonnes, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 41.5% decrease. In contrast, the biggest increase was seen in 2018, with an 11.4% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Croatia's export destinations for sucrose in solid form were highly diversified. Italy accounted for 19.2% of exports, Bulgaria for 11.6%, and Hungary for 11.1%, together making up just 41.9% of total flows. The remaining 58.1% was spread across numerous smaller trading partners.

Croatia's export value of sucrose in solid form has fallen for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports amounted to 41.8 million US dollars, which is 30.0% lower than the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value decreased by 62.3%, equating to an average annual decline of 27.8%.

During the 2017-2020 period, Croatia's export partners in value terms were diverse. Italy contributed 19.1% of export value, Hungary 11.7%, and Slovenia 11.3%, together accounting for only 42.1% of total flows. A significant 57.9% was distributed among many other countries.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 4.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.5%. The lowest import volume was in 2018 at 36.0 thousand tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 45.7 thousand tonnes. The largest decline occurred in 2018 with a 9.2% drop, and the biggest increase was in 2019 with a 26.8% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Slovenia was the leading source of Croatia's sucrose in solid form imports, accounting for 49.7% of the total. Austria followed with 13.8%, and Hungary with 12.1%. Together, these three countries represented 75.6% of all import flows.

Croatia's import value of sucrose in solid form has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 21.3 million US dollars, showing a robust 10.3% growth compared to 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 14.5%, with an average annual decline of 5.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 15.6 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 37.4%. The biggest increase occurred in 2019 with a 23.8% rise.

Over the 2017-2020 period, Slovenia dominated Croatia's import structure in value terms, accounting for 44.0% of imports. Hungary contributed 14.3%, and Austria 12.8%. These three countries together made up 71.1% of total import flows.
