Earlier Report Observations
The market volume for rapeseed, colza or mustard oil in Sub-Saharan Africa contracted from 75 000 t in 2018 to a low of 61 000 t in 2020, before beginning a recovery that accelerated sharply in 2023 to reach 82 000 t.
This expansion was primarily supply-driven, as domestic production rose steadily from 50 000 t in 2020 to 79 000 t in 2023, offsetting a concurrent decline in imports. The growing output reduced reliance on foreign supplies and increased the total volume available in the market.
By 2024, imports had fallen further to 4 800 t, while Africa-wide production of refined rapeseed oil continued to grow for the tenth consecutive year, reaching 5.1 million tons. Kenya emerged as the largest importer of the oil in Africa, highlighting ongoing regional demand shifts.
