The Vietnamese soya sauce market volume fluctuated between 46 000 t and 50 000 t from 2018 to 2023. After starting at 48 672 t in 2018, consumption dipped to 46 172 t in 2020. It then recovered to nearly 49 500 t in 2022 before retreating to 47 358 t in 2023.

In value terms, the market experienced more pronounced swings, falling from 108.3 million US dollars in 2018 to 87.3 million in 2019. Despite a partial rebound in 2020, the market value remained below 2018 levels throughout the period, ending at 80.0 million US dollars in 2023.

Soya sauce production in Vietnam declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 46 276 tonnes, remaining broadly stable compared to 2019. The peak was recorded in 2018 at 48 813 tonnes, with the largest increase of 6.2% that year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 4.7%.

In 2020, Vietnam's soya sauce output was valued at 92.1 million US dollars, marking a moderate uptick of 5.8% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 3.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.0%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 87.1 million US dollars, while the maximum was in 2018 at 109.5 million US dollars. Exports soya sauce from Vietnam

Exports in kind, t

Soya sauce exports from Vietnam increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Vietnam exported 4 259 tonnes, showing a slight gain of 2.3% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 13.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.4%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 3 631 tonnes, with the largest decline of 3.0% that year. The largest increase of 14.6% occurred in 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Cambodia, and China consistently led as the top destinations for Vietnam's soya sauce exports in volume terms. Russia accounted for 26.9% of exports, Cambodia for 13.6%, and China for 10.9%, jointly representing 51.3% of total export flows.

In 2020, Vietnam's soya sauce export value amounted to 8 480 thousand US dollars, indicating an 8.9% rise compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 16.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.2%. Soya sauce imports into Vietnam increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 4 155 tonnes, showing minimal change from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.0%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 3 489 tonnes, with the largest decline of 10.9% that year. The largest increase of 18.6% occurred in 2019.

Foreign soya sauce supplies to Vietnam increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports were recorded at 8 238 thousand US dollars, representing a 3.1% gain over the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports rose by 20.8%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 6.5%.
