Earlier Report Observations

Silkworm cocoon production in Southern Asia rose from 214 thousand tons in 2018 to 241 thousand tons in 2020. This expansion was supported by government initiatives promoting sericulture, including subsidies for farmers and the introduction of improved silkworm breeds to enhance yield. Research into climate-resilient mulberry varieties and the adoption of fortified feed supplements further strengthened output, with production continuing to grow in 2020 despite COVID-19 disruptions due to advances in thermotolerant silkworm breeds.

After a decline to 227 thousand tons in 2021, primarily due to climate variability affecting mulberry cultivation and silkworm health, production recovered to reach 262 thousand tons by 2023. This rebound was driven by increased industry investment in hybrid cocoon varieties and policy support for infrastructure, such as drip irrigation systems in mulberry gardens. Efforts to upskill workers and integrate digital marketplaces also improved efficiency and supported the market's upward trajectory.
