Between 2018 and 2024, the Spanish market for silicones in primary forms experienced significant fluctuations in physical volume. Consumption rose to over 40 700 t in 2019, then contracted to 37 556 t in 2020 and further to 30 918 t in 2021. By 2023-2024, the market volume had stabilized around 32 700-32 850 t.

In value terms, the market followed a distinct trajectory. After declining from $176.8 million in 2018 to $129.2 million in 2020, it rebounded sharply to $175.9 million in 2021 despite lower physical volume, indicating a notable shift in product mix or price levels. The market value then moderated to $163.6 million by 2024.

Domestic production varied considerably, reaching a high of 20 188 t in 2021 before falling to 13 512 t in 2023. Trade flows also shifted, with imports generally exceeding exports throughout the period, supporting overall market supply.

Spain's production of silicones in primary forms declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, output was valued at 52 389 thousand US dollars, marking a 7.0% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production fell by 6.6%, averaging an annual decline of 2.3%. The peak occurred in 2018 at 67 077 thousand US dollars, with the largest increase that year of 19.5%. In contrast, 2019 saw the steepest drop of 16.0%.

Spain's production volume of silicones in primary forms decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output totaled 14 458 tonnes, down 1.8% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production declined by 2.9%, with an average annual rate of 1.0%. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 15 462 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 3.8%. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 4.7%.

In 2020, Spain exported 15 257 tonnes of silicones in primary forms, showing a moderate increase of 7.7% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 3.8%, averaging an annual decline of 1.3%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 14 166 tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 14.5%. The peak was in 2018 with 16 560 tonnes.

Between 2017 and 2020, Spain's exports of silicones in primary forms were distributed across numerous markets. The top three destinations—the United States (13.8% of exports in kind), Portugal (13.4%), and France (11.1%)—collectively accounted for 38.3% of total flows.

In 2020, Spain's exports of silicones in primary forms were valued at 63.1 million US dollars, showing little change from 2019. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 75.4 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 21.0%. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 16.4%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 3.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.3%. The peak was in 2019 at 40 142 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 8.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, France (33.8% of imports in kind), Germany (33.0%), and Belgium (10.0%) were the leading suppliers of silicones in primary forms to Spain. Together, they accounted for 76.8% of total imports in kind.

Spain's imports of silicones in primary forms by value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 140.0 million US dollars, reflecting a sharp drop of 16.6% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 3.6%, averaging an annual decline of 1.2%. The highest value was in 2018 at 185.2 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 27.6%.
