Eastern Asia's shelled hazelnuts production declined after two years of growth. In 2019, production reached its peak at 20 027 tons, but then fell to 16 121 tons in 2020, marking a 19.5% decrease from the previous year. Over the entire period from 2017 to 2020, production actually increased by 15.4%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 4.9%. The most significant year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, when production rose by 19.7%.

Exports shelled hazelnuts from Eastern Asia

Exports in kind, t

Eastern Asia's exports of shelled hazelnuts declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports dropped sharply to just 12 tons, representing a dramatic 73.9% decrease compared to 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, exports plummeted by 93.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -58.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam was the dominant destination for Eastern Asia's shelled hazelnuts exports in volume terms, accounting for 74.7% of the total. The remaining exports were distributed among a variety of smaller markets.

Eastern Asia's shelled hazelnuts export value also declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 80 thousand US dollars, showing a steep 52.2% drop from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value decreased by 93.7%, which corresponds to an average annual decline of 60.2%.

In value terms from 2017 to 2020, Vietnam absorbed 73.9% of Eastern Asia's total shelled hazelnuts exports. The rest was spread across a wide range of smaller trading partners.

Eastern Asia's imports of shelled hazelnuts in volume terms declined in 2020, with a total of 4 000 tons imported, reflecting a 14.1% decrease from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 16%, equating to an average annual decline of 5.6%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 3 906 tons, which also saw the largest year-on-year decline of 20.3%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase, with imports rising by 22.7%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 15.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of -5.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 33 694 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest year-on-year decline of 21.8%. Conversely, 2019 had the largest increase, with import value rising by 19.3%.
