Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, Uganda's sesame oil production showed significant volatility. Initial output faced constraints from low mechanization and traditional extraction methods, limiting commercial scale. The market volume fell in 2019 to 83.9 thousand tons as these inefficiencies persisted, while the Uganda National Bureau of Standards began developing quality standards to reduce export rejections. Production rebounded to 102.0 thousand tons in 2020, supported by government projects that refocused on boosting oil crop output and promoted organic certification for international markets, though increased exports tempered domestic availability.

Between 2021 and 2022, production entered a downward trend. Despite rising demand in local and overseas markets, unreliable production hampered by low mechanization led to a drop to 94.4 thousand tons in 2021. The decline continued in 2022, with volume reaching 82.7 thousand tons, even as authorities fast-tracked sesame standard implementation and state-owned companies like GADC expanded farmer support programs to enhance quality for export.

In 2023, market volume stabilized at 81.7 thousand tons. Global demand for chemical-free sesame oil encouraged ongoing investments in improved seed varieties and farmer training. Recent industry focus has been directed by climate resilience funding, increased agricultural budgets, and growing consumer preference for organic products, shaping efforts toward quality control and market access.
