The Slovak market for self-adhesive plastic films and sheets began to adapt to new environmental regulations from 2018, including a charge on lightweight plastic bags and a ban on certain single-use plastic items. The most direct impact came with the prohibition on placing specific single-use plastic products on the market from July 2021, which contributed to a contraction in domestic market volume to 13 015 t that year.

By 2022, the market dynamics shifted as growing demand for polyolefins, key raw materials for adhesive films, and heightened environmental requirements for sustainable printing and production stimulated local output. Production rose to 1 594 t, and the market's value increased significantly to 119.3 million US dollars, reflecting a move towards higher-value, eco-friendly products.

In the following years, ongoing legislative developments like the draft Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and a consumer trend towards sustainability encouraged manufacturers to invest in technologies for PVC-free laminates and recycled materials. This drove production to 2 211 t by 2024 and fueled a rise in exports to 8 266 t, while the domestic market volume adjusted to 12 873 t.

After two consecutive years of growth, Slovakia's exports of self-adhesive plastic films and sheets declined in 2020. That year, exports totaled 2,690 tonnes, marking a sharp drop of 55.6% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 5.8% overall, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 1.9%. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 6,062 tonnes, while the largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, at 67.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Czechia, France, and Austria were consistently the main destinations for Slovakia's exports of self-adhesive plastic films and sheets in volume terms. Czechia accounted for 27.4% of exports, France for 25.7%, and Austria for 11.0%. Together, these three countries represented 64.2% of total export flows during this period.

Throughout 2017-2020, Czechia, Austria, and Hungary were the three largest markets for Slovakia's exports of self-adhesive plastic films and sheets in value terms. Combined, they accounted for 57.5% of total export flows during these years.

Slovakia's imports of self-adhesive plastic films and sheets in volume terms rose for the second consecutive year in 2020. Imports totaled 15,934 tonnes, showing a strong increase of 24.2% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 23.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.3%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 12,797 tonnes, while the largest decline occurred that same year, at 0.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Czechia, and Poland dominated Slovakia's imports of self-adhesive plastic films and sheets in volume terms. Germany led with 30.2% of imports, followed by Czechia at 16.2%, and Poland at 10.3%. Together, these three countries made up 56.7% of total import flows during this period.
