The market volume for salted, brined, dried or smoked pork in Montenegro contracted sharply from 459 t in 2018 to just 20 t in 2023. This decline occurred despite steady growth in domestic production, which increased from 1 221 t to 2 000 t over the same period.

The collapse in domestic market volume was primarily driven by a surge in exports, which more than doubled from 936 t in 2018 to 2 267 t in 2023. As producers redirected output to foreign markets, less product remained available for local consumption, even as imports fluctuated between 101 t and 311 t annually.

By 2023, exports accounted for over 113% of domestic production, indicating that Montenegro's pork processing sector had become heavily export-oriented. The country's market volume thus shrank to a fraction of its former size, reflecting a major shift in trade flows rather than a drop in overall output.

Montenegro's exports of salted, brined, dried, or smoked pork increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 1 115 t, an 8.1% rise compared to 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 8.6%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 3.0%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 936 t, which also experienced the largest drop of 23.3%. In contrast, 2019 saw the biggest increase of 10.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Serbia was the dominant market for Montenegro's exports in kind, accounting for 80.4% of total flows, while other markets made up the remainder.
