The market volume for non-rendered pig fat in Montenegro contracted from over 650 t in 2018 to around 520 t in 2020, as imports fell by more than a third. During this phase, the country maintained export flows, including to North Macedonia, which provided an outlet for domestic production.

Between 2021 and 2022, the market shrank further to just under 300 t, driven primarily by a steep rise in exports. Montenegro emerged as a significant supplier of pig fat to Croatia, with overseas shipments diverting substantial volumes away from the local market.

A rebound to 400 t occurred in 2023, supported by higher imports. By 2024, exports had climbed above 500 t, underscoring the sector's export orientation. Underlying these movements were evolving EU regulations on pork production and a shift in consumer preferences toward fresh, local meat and away from processed products.

Montenegro's production of non-rendered pig fat free of lean meat has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 0.3 thousand tonnes, marking a significant 11.2% rise compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 2.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 0.2 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 11.9%.

After two years of decline, Montenegro's exports of non-rendered pig fat free of lean meat have rebounded. In 2020, export volumes reached 74.6 tonnes, reflecting a strong 12.0% increase year-over-year. However, between 2017 and 2020, exports overall decreased by 10.3%, equating to an average annual decline of 3.6%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 66.6 tonnes, which also experienced the largest drop of 18.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Bosnia and Herzegovina dominated Montenegro's exports of non-rendered pig fat free of lean meat, accounting for 81.1% of the total volume. The remaining exports were distributed among numerous countries, each with smaller individual shares.

In 2020, Montenegro exported non-rendered pig fat free of lean meat worth 394.0 thousand US dollars, showing a gradual increase of 4.2% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, however, export values decreased by 14.5%, with an average annual decline of 5.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 378.2 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 21.8%. In contrast, the highest value was in 2018 at 483.4 thousand US dollars, marking the largest increase of 4.9%.
